I've been getting messages that 3G retires 31 July. Now I have to do something by June!

CataCluj
I plan to stick around

I thought I have 2 months to replace phones. Suddenly it's only one month or I get charged "a one-time $75 3G administrative charge" and my "mobile device will lose connectivity shortly after this date"! Not July 31st?

How fantastic that Rogers finds way to charge you when they reduce your service!

And why "shortly after this date" when it should be 31 July as stated?

3g has been around since 2008,  you have had 17 years to upgrade to a phone that is 4G Volte or higher, whats been stopping you?

What an expert! What you say has no relevance. Phones bought just a few years ago stop working. I got message that phone with "5G" in name won't work (Moto One 5G Ace).

Another, Moto One Action was bought new less than 5 years ago; still a good phone. Now obsolete.

So you stop telling me I had 17 years!

And how would that be an excuse to charge money when they discontinue something!

Re: I've been getting messages that 3G retires 31 July. Now I have to do something by June!

The issue there is, some phones genuinely aren't compatible and some are but Rogers refuses to allow them to be provisioned because they don't support the device. Ultimately. Rogers wants to sell more phones too so the best way to make sure your device is compatible and will be provisioned for VoLTE, is to buy that device from Rogers or an authorized retailer.

VoLTE is not a single standard globally. There are 3 main implemebtations that can vary greatly by region and carrier. They are not cross-compatible!

That said. I don't know which one it is for the Moto One 5G Ace but I have owned several devices that worked perfectly fine on the Rogers, Bell, and Telus networks for years using VoLTE with 2G and 3G disabled on the device and yet these devices are no longer deemed compatible by Rogers and will not be provisioned. Even the steps to bypass that have now been blocked so Rogers is actively trying really hard encourage customers to buy or lease incredibly over-priced devices.

If you want to stay with a Motorola device. The Moto Edge, Moto G, and RAZR 2025 are all decent devices on the lower end of procong in Canada. You can also buy them from BestBuy, direct from Motorola, and other Canadian retailers if you don't want to buy it from Rogers. I purchased my RAZR Ultra 2025 1TB direct from Motorola.

I don't expect all my phones to keep working, but those less than 5 (maybe) or 3 (definitely) years should.

So that's the thing: Rogers just chooses to not allow some perfectly "in spec" phones to work.

AND they charge you $75 if you're not upgraded by June end. What if I want to upgrade just by July end, when the deadline is? One month could mean new tech. Also, from now it would be twice the time to choose a replacement, that they cut in half!

They don't "encourage", they force! And expect goodwill?

just because a phone is sold and labeled as 4g or 5g, does not mean it automatically works 100% on rogers or other canadian networks, its YOUR responsibility as the phone purchaser to ensure it is compatible with the frequencies and technologies, no one elses responsibility,  and if you cut corners and say "oh the 4g and 5g wont connect but it will connect to rogers in 3g" then you did not do your homework and its your responsibility to buy a phone that will connect to 100% of the network, or if you do not, you pay the price by having the phone not work and now having to do your homework and buy a phone that works

dont get mad at me, I did not make up the rules, I just follow them and do my home work

If it's sold in Canada by big retailers labeled as 4G, 5G, it better works (maybe with few exceptions) on 4G, 5G labeled networks.

MOREOVER, if it works when you buy it, it better works for a few years, as it was clearly compatible when it was bought!

It MUST NOT be because Rogers chooses to not "provision" compatible phones!

The answer to which phones work can be easily found by using the following link:

The first 4G phone I bought from Rogers, did NOT have VoLTE compatibility, but during the time I used it, which was 8 or so years ago, it worked fine because 3G networks existed to make calls on.

The next 4G phone I purchased properly supported VoLTE.

Its also true that many 4G phones purchased from outside of Canada also may not support VoLTe, so check the link that 57 provided to ensure your phone works,  They are dismantling 3G networks, this means any phone that needs to connect to 3G to make calls, this includes 4G phones that do not support VoLTE, will NOT work.

Oh and in case your wondering what I did with my old phones, I donated them to Africa, where they will still function for a few more years.

Thank you 57.

That is a little useful, but far from enough. I already used it a while ago and you'd think ALL IMEIs should return Yes or No, but it doesn't even find some of my phones' IMEI. While that could be interpreted as "not supported" you'd think they should find them.

These are not obscure imports, these are Motorola phones bought from Costco.

Also, "The answer to which phones work" is less than what I'm looking for.

I want Rogers to support all (Canadian sold) phones that have the specs; not just choose some.

Rogers did support the phones at one time, they just no longer support them due to the sunsetting of the equipment required to make the phones work.   you think rogers wants to keep the 3g equipment running, pay for the hydro and backbone links?

your not the only person to be affected by this, even IOT equiptment such as cellular based home alarm systems will stop working, unless the customer upgrades their 3G radio to a 4G or higher radio.

It's very annoying you talk nonsense.

I'm complaining about:

1. Reducing the window to get new phones TO HALF.

2. Charging US money when THEY reduce service

3. Not supporting phones seemingly on a whim. Phones that are up to standard.

The obsolete "Moto One Action" was only mentioned in reply to your "I had 17 years to upgrade", not as they should continue to support it.

The Moto One 5G Ace? They should! And what do I get when I try the IMEI on their web site at the link above?

This: "We couldn't locate your device. We're unable to certify that your device is compatible with the Rogers network."

The text also reads: Only phones previously sold by Rogers will show up,

this  is probably why your motorola phone is not showing up, it was never sold by rogers.  why are you getting mad at me? I am not giving you a hard time, all the info Im telling has been made available for such a long time its widely known already.

I don't see anywhere on that page that "Only phones previously sold by Rogers will show up". And it would only make sense if IMEI tech data wasn't available to them, which doesn't make sense either.

How are you not giving me a hard time with "I had 17 years to upgrade my device"? That's worse than "hard time". "Hard time" implies some difficulty, when your reply was not true (I did NOT have 17 years...) and not relevant.

go to the device information window on the rogers link, click "select phone"

there you have it, there is the message I was talking about.

Good luck with that.  Other providers probably have similar restrictions.  You now have the information link you need to check which phones work and which don't.

CLEARLY that applies only to the "Select Phone" method, as it's not there when you choose to use "IMEI number".

I already explained that that link is likely not comprehensive. Pauly thinks (although that would mean bad web design) that it only works for Rogers bought phones. Since when is it OK for a carrier to only support phones sold by them?

Also, if nobody complains about corporations (or if people like you tell the complainers that that's how it is, and NEVER hope to change things), they'll happily continue to do what they do; I'm hoping (as unlikely as it is) they'll change if they hear enough.

I think/hope that's why those documentaries were made, not to make us think we're sheep, never to try to change things.

1. That is not the case. I (and others on this forum) purchased phones elsewhere, however, we made sure before purchasing that they would work on Rogers.

2. I have fought and won many battles with various corporations. I've also not won some battles.  Since I'm now in my 70's, I have learned which battles are worth my time and which ones I don't bang my head against the wall. Trying to pass along some experience, that's all.

3. Agree.

Good Luck.

P.S. The IMEI number is not much use when you're searching for phones to purchase because you probably can't get that number without purchasing...
