I have a 4G phone but Rogers wants to charge me extra for 3G support, what gives?

rpetti
I'm here a lot

My current phone (Moto G7 Power) is fully LTE/4G capable with VoLTE support, but Rogers insists I'm using a 3G phone and is going to charge me an extra $3/month for it.

Is anyone else in the same boat? I don't get how this makes any sense. Only thing I can think of is that my phone's IMS Status is "unregistered" but I've done everything I can to try and get it enabled. It's like Rogers intentionally denylisted my phone to force me to pay extra monthly or pay for a new phone I don't want.

DM conversation results in case anyone is interested:

- Support personnel were lovely and patient as usual.

- I learned that in order to connect to VoLTE, my IMEI numbers need to be manually associated with my account, presumably for IMS registration to complete. There doesn't seem to be any way for me to do that myself from my account dashboard, so it is confusing to me how we're supposed to be able to bring our own devices.

- Rogers' system claims my phone's IMEI numbers are invalid, despite being completely valid and currently being used on their network for LTE data. Support couldn't help beyond this point as they don't administrate the system itself.

- Was asked that I reach out to the 3G retirement hotline, which as stated before, doesn't appear to work or is overloaded to the point of not being functional (not even tossed into a queue, just disconnected by a voice assistant).

I'll keep trying to get through to the hotline. If that fails, I'll either roll the dice on buying a new phone that may or may not work on Rogers, or move to a new carrier if/when Rogers cuts off my access entirely when they shut down 3G.

Hello @rpetti,

This fee is used to recover part of the cost of maintaining our legacy systems.  This charge will apply monthly as long as your usage is on our 2G and 3G networks.

When you use your device are you primarily seeing 3G or LTE? If you see LTE, then you would not be using our legacy networks and wouldn't be subject to the fee.

We offer very limited support for grey market devices because of all the variables that are involved with non-Rogers devices. We cannot guarantee that all of our network features will work with non-Rogers devices.

If you brought your own device, please confirm that it is compatible with the Rogers network. You can call your device manufacturer to check if it is certified on our network.

We’re here to make sure you’re supported during this transition. Should you opt to update your device to one that’s compatible with our 5G Network, please feel free to send a private message to @CommunityHelps so we can assist you further. For more information on how our Private Messaging system works, you can find out more here.

Re: I have a 4G phone but Rogers wants to charge me extra for 3G support, what gives?

As stated in the original post, my phone is compatible, and LTE works fine, at least for data. As near as I can tell, Rogers is (intentionally or not) blocking my access to Voice Over LTE by denying my phone's IMS registration attempts, which I suspect is causing my phone to fall back on 3G for voice calls. Whether this is due to an out of date SIM or bad behavior on Rogers' part, I don't know, because I can't get through to anyone with the knowledge or tools to assist me.

I already tried the hotline and the voice assistant disconnected me due to high volume. I tried online support and the first time I was disconnected due to high volume after 15 minutes of trying to convince the virtual assistant to connect me with a human, and the second time I finally got through to someone who simply couldn't assist as they didn't have the necessary tools. I have tried contacting Rogers' Office of the President via "Raise a Concern" twice, with the first attempt resulting in my plan being randomly changed without my consent, and I'm still waiting for a response to the second attempt.

I'll attempt through the direct messages on the link you sent, but I'm surprised this is even an option because I don't see it mentioned anywhere on the notification or Rogers' contact pages. I just need someone technical from Rogers to check why my phone isn't working on their network, and compensate me for a new device if it comes to that.

Thanks. That article links to this one, which has an "interesting" bit of info. Guess they're just using old stock for the free upgrade option.

The phones offered included the Moto G 5G (2023) and the Samsung Galaxy A54. Notably, both of these phones are already available for $0 down and $0/mo financing on Rogers’ website, so this isn’t really a special deal.

I plan to stick around

I'm a Rogers customer. Will I be additionally billed for using Rogers 3G/HSPA cellular network like voice, text and data?

I've been here awhile

If I upgrade to 5G as a Connected for Success customer, do I have to now enter into a 2 year plan, whereas before, no contract was required
